Art Break: Art Is Going To the Dogs (Courtesy of William Wegman)

By A. E. Colas, Contributing Writer, October 16, 2017

The internet is full of animals doing all kinds of things: singing, jumping out of boxes, speaking in French. You could spend hours watching — and we know, because we’ve just finished doing it. But before the internet, there was William Wegman with a large format Polaroid camera photographing his beautiful Weimaraner dogs. By using props and posing the dogs in various settings, he explored ideas about humanity, animals and the ways the two merge. When you see his work in our downtown pick of Sperone Westwater, you’ll appreciate the difference between net surfing and real art – however, it’s not as easy as it looks. Go ahead and dress up your dachshund but we guarantee it won’t be the same – although you’ll probably get plenty of likes! Another thing to like: all our listings are free admission.
