Award-Winning Guitarist Mary Halvorson Makes Her Debut Performance as Leader at Village Vanguard

Village Vanguard

178 Seventh Avenue South, New York, NY 10014

In DownBeat magazine’s prestigious annual critics poll, the unlikely but certainly deserving Best Guitar winner is Mary Halvorson who outpaced perennial six-string victors such as Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny and John Scofield. She’s also recognized in the Rising Star rankings in three categories: Jazz Artist, Jazz Group and Composer. Even before being awarded the prize, Halvorson has been scoring important gigs with her octet ranging from the D.C. Jazz Festival to Chicago’s fest this year.

But probably the most significant engagement will take place at the Village Vanguard July 18-23. It will be her first show there as a leader. “For me, this is huge,” she says. “It’s not something I would have ever imagined.” She’ll be performing with her octet—alto saxophonist Jon Irabagon, tenor saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, trombonist Jacob Garchik, pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn, drummer Ches Smith and bassist Chris Lightcap, who’s subbing for John Hébert—and will feature the music from her brilliant octet album Away With You plus new music she has been recording for the date. —Dan Ouellette
