Bold, Enticing and Swinging Vocalist Polly Gibbons Celebrates Her Sophomore Project at Joe’s Pub

It’s always a treat to hear a delectable new voice make her way into the jazz circle. Welcome Polly Gibbons, a Brit-based songster weaned on the black music of the stateside heroes from Miles to Aretha. Gibbons’ sophomore outing, Is It Me…?, promises to be a winner. She’s a bold driver into swinging tunes, a raw slammer into the r&b groove, a soul belter and an enticing balladic chanteuse. With a killer horn-charged band backing her on many tracks, Gibbons shows that she’s a future star in the making by her runway through standards (a hip zip through “Basin St. Blues”), soul hits (Aretha’s gutsy “Dr. Feelgood”), a swing-charged re-envisioned Thomas Dolby pop tune (the energetic opener “Ability to Swing”) and three originals (the gently swaying title track). No telling how it all plays out with any new vocals act, but worth while giving Gibbons a shot at the next tier by catching her deliver the goods live. —Dan Ouellette
