Boundary Busting Trumpeter Maurice ‘Mobetta’ Brown Hosts His 7-Week Residency ‘Mobetta Tuesdays’ at Jazz Standard
116 East Twenty-Seventh Street New York, NY 10016
Given, all the jazz presenters in New York are doing their best to feature top-tier musicians in their clubs and performance spaces, making the city the place to be for a full jazz immersion. But, especially for young and adventurous listeners, sometimes the zone feels a bit restrictive and even predictable. New Orleans-born, Brooklyn-based trumpeter Maurice Brown, aka Mobetta, has something new and refreshing to offer—think: a compelling mix of jazz, jam, blues-rock and hip-hop—at his adventurous launch into his Mobetta Tuesdays weekly residency at Jazz Standard.
It’s a terrific shot in the arm for the sometimes stale jazz landscape in New York. Brown will lead each week’s theme, enlisting musical friends who will be communing with each other often for the first time. A sample guest list: Marcus Strickland (tenor sax), Snarky Puppy’s Michael League (bass), Ben Williams (bass), Lenny White (drums), Nir Felder (guitar), Skerik (tenor sax), Marcus Gilmore (drums), Christie Dashiell (vocals), Jaleel Shaw (alto sax).
The residency begins with a March 12 celebration of Brown’s pleasing new album The Mood (Mobetta Music) and ends with the April 25 show, SOUL’d OUT—The Finale that he promises will close the series with a ton of jam band party music. Other themes include Love Potion (March 21), Electric Ride (March 28), Pass The Peas (April 4), The New Standard (April 11), Straight No Chaser (April 18). Highly recommended for intrepid jazz seekers. —Dan Ouellette
