Guitarist Kevin Eubanks Celebrates His Impressive New Recording, ‘East West Time Line,’ With His East Coast Band at Birdland
315 West Forty-Fourth Street, New York, NY 10036
The guitarist Kevin Eubanks has made for himself a bicoastal career. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston in the ’80s, he moved to New York where he grew up quickly in band settings under the watchful eyes of such jazz legends as Art Blakey, Roy Haynes and Sam Rivers. The West Coast called him in 1992 when Branford Marsalis invited him to join The Tonight Show Band. Three years later after Branford sought to return to his successful freedom as a leader, Eubanks became the leader and settled in for 15 years. After leaving in 2010, he signed a recording deal with Mack Avenue Records. He’s onto his fourth album released there this April, East West Time Line, which celebrates his experience on both coasts. He focuses on the East Coast at his Birdland run, with a stellar cast of the three of the four album musicians: trumpeter Nicholas Payton, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts.
ZEALnyc‘s Contributing Writer Denin Koch favorably reviewed the new album in Jazz Notes, concluding, “East West Time Line is that rare album that succeeds at bringing great music to an ambitious theme. With this album, he shows off his signature style while moving back toward a straight-ahead approach. Look for this album to be celebrated as one of the best of the year upon its release.”—Dan Ouellette
