Jazztopad Festival Swings Into Dizzy’s With the Stryjo Trio and Wójciński/Szmańda Quartet

Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola

10 Columbus Cir, New York, NY 10019

Polish jazz hits town on its third annual excursion of showing statesiders that there’s a wealth of jazz outside of New York. In a two-evening stay at Dizzy’s, there’s a double bill that features the Wójcinski/Szmanda Quartet (Szymon Wojcinski on piano, Maurycy Wojcinski on trumpet, Ksawery Wojcinski on acoustic bass, Krzysztof Szmanda on drums) formed in 2015. The group’s compositions rely on “an effortless, remarkably peaceful development of a theme, which then evolves into a parade of improvisation, but one that is still within the frames of composition, making the listener fall into a kind of trance.” Also on the bill is the Stryjo Trio (Nikola Kolodziejczyk on piano, Maciej Szczycinski on acoustic bass, Michal Bryndal on drums) deleiver an improvisation-rich show of modern European jazz that draws inspiration from Polish folk music, flamenco, disco, punk and world music. —Dan Ouellette
