Certain events and traditions help us celebrate the changing seasons. While during most of the year activities take place indoors in concert hall venues and theaters, we know it’s summer when everything starts moving outdoors. For three weeks each summer the plaza in front of the Damrosch Bandshell at Lincoln Center becomes an outdoor dance hall when Midsummer Night Swing hosts a variety of dance bands providing live-music for all the dancing attendees. This season’s dance parties begin on Tuesday, June 27 and continue through Saturday, July 15, 2017.
The whole plaza is transformed into a magical space with a dance floor and special dedicated lighting, contributing enormously to the overall ambiance and experience. The music presented brings everything from Swing to Salsa, Disco to Tango, and Rock n’ Roll and Rhythm and Blues, to the starlit venue, allowing all imaginable ballroom dance styles a time to shine. Each night a specific dance style is hosted with a corresponding band engaged to match that style of dance.
The dance floor opens at 6:00pm with an optional group dance lesson from 6:30pm — 7:15pm. The band starts playing at 7:30pm for two one-hour sets (7:30pm — 8:30pm; and 9:00pm — 10:00pm), with a break in between. For the fifth year in a row there will be a “silent disco” from 10:00pm — 11:30pm (headset rental available); dates: June 29 and July 8.
This year the series kicks off with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra, and ends with the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, with many other groups and events featured and highlighted in-between. The whole series culminates in a huge Lindy Hop Dance Contest on July 15th. There is a bar available for purchasing drinks, and various food trucks are on premises to help you keep up your strength (last year the BBQ favorite Hill Country was in residence). So make your plans now and channel your inner Fred and Ginger—or whoever your dancing idols may be. Who cares about Dancing With the Stars when you can be dancing under the stars!
