45 Rockefeller Plaza, NYC
Famous as the home of NBC Nightly News, Saturday Night Live, and 30 Rock, Rockefeller Center is a complex of shops, restaurants, and outdoor areas that shouldn’t be missed. Its promenade (just west of Fifth Avenue) is beautifully planted year round, and particularly beautiful during the holidays. Winter activities can include a visit to the Christmas tree and skating at its famous rink, while year-round activities include touring NBC Studios and a visit to the Center’s 70th-floor observatory, Top of the Rock. Completed in 1933, Rockefeller Center is an important example of Art Deco architecture. Visit the lobby of the GE Building to see murals entitled American Progress completed by Catalan artist Josep Maria Sert after Diego Rivera’s controversial installation Man at the Crossroads was abandoned and destroyed. Rockefeller Center is also close to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Lord & Taylor.
