315 West Forty-Fourth Street, New York, NY 10036
Continuing its premiere reputation as “The Jazz Corner of the World,” Birdland proudly presents a rare series hosted by celebrated guitarist Sean Harkness, performing with two other giants of jazz, plus blues, American Songbook and pop – on June 14th at 6:00 p.m. at Birdland Jazz Club, 315 West 44th St., NYC. “DUOS with Sean Harkness” offers three distinct concerts showcasing a different combination of top tier talent each night on June 14, August 23 and Sept. 13, 2018.
The DUOS kickoff on June 14th features host Harkness, who is a multiple MAC, Bistro and Broadway World award-winner over several years and categories through 2018, including “Outstanding Instrumentalist” and “Best Recording.” Sean is commonly described as an “iconic” solo and ensemble virtuoso, with 8 top albums recorded for Windham Hill, BMG/RCA/Sony and others. He’ll be performing duets with his illustrious guests – 9 time Grammy winner with 17 Grammy nominations, vocalist Janis Siegel, plus international trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn sensation Warren Vache.
Harkness is a rare technical master, composer, and interpreter of diverse musical styles placing him in the top ten guitarists today. With classical integrity, an insightful jazz sensibility, and blues, folk, new age and pop energy he intersperses with mellow, melodic recordings, Sean’s emotive warmth, joy and charisma jump off the stage enrapturing audiences.
Coming from Harkness’ latest sell out performances with film and theater star Kathleen Turner at Café Carlyle, Harkness in Birdland’s “DUOS” offers an irresistible program of the best of the
American Songbook, swing, country, Brazilian and pop favorites, in an intimate evening of music and conversation with highly lauded musicians and personalities with huge international followings.
Janis Siegel is best known as the trademark voice of The Manhattan Transfer, with a dozen of her own solo albums, numerous collaborations from jazz to blues, including recent Broadway and Latin American music releases. Coincidentally, Siegel won a 1980 Grammy Award for her arrangement of “Birdland.” Janis is a Brooklyn, NY native.
Warren Vache, a native of NJ, demonstrates a wide ranging horn brilliance igniting legions of followers. Vache is a frequent performer at the top international jazz festivals. His full career includes big band and swing in the Benny Goodman Band. He’s a recording leader for film, TV, and a Guest Artist in over 35 albums.
Movie star, theater actress and singer, Kathleen Turner, received rave reviews for her just-ended May run show, “Finding My Voice” at the Café Carlyle in NYC. At the conclusion Turner said of Sean Harkness, “His musicianship is extraordinary, but he gives much more than superb guitar. His joy in the music, his ability to improvise – that adds to the feel and intention of the song. This cannot be taught. I think myself very fortunate to have worked with him.”
According to Jazz Inside New York, “Sean is a technical virtuoso whose Joe Pass / Tommy Emmanuel fingerstyle approach is always in service to telling a story or creating a feeling within the song; he transcends many genres and can touch listeners of many backgrounds.” On repeated tours attracting huge fan groups in Japan, Jazzlife Japan writes, “Making full use of his flowing arpeggios, powerful strumming, and crystal clear harmonics, Sean creates a variety of sound with one acoustic guitar, which clearly shows his rich musicality and world-class ability of expression.”
