ZEALnyc, June 12, 2017
The New York Philharmonic has completed its scheduled 2016-2017 concert season in David Geffen Hall this past weekend with Alan Gilbert as its Music Director before embarking to Shanghai for a series of concerts in July. So this week before leaving town, the New York Philharmonic Series in the Parks moves outdoors for its annual series of free concerts in the parks, bringing great music to the masses in all five boroughs.
As a special feature to these concerts Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer, all potential audience members are invited to join the Philharmonic in community performances of the “Goin’ Home” theme from the Largo movement of Dvořák’s New World Symphony preceding the concerts in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn, June 13–16, 2017. Audiences are encouraged to bring any instrument (voice included) to the parks to join in the performances, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert, before the Orchestra performs the full symphony during the concerts. Participation by novices and professionals alike is encouraged; the music will be taught to the crowd in the parks, and the Philharmonic will also make vocal and instrumental parts available online before the concerts at newworldinitiative.com.
