Vibraphone Virtuoso Stefon Harris Introduces His New Band Sonic Creed at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre

Miller Theatre

2960 Broadway, New York, NY 10027

In 1999, DownBeat magazine published an issue with its cover theme: “25 for the Future.” Among the two dozen-plus future stars was vibraphonist Stefon Harris, who was then a young upstart signed to Blue Note Records and traipsing around the country as a member of guitarist Charlie Hunter’s band. He’s come a long way since then as an exciting and well-studied performer/artist, constantly changing the scenery of his imagination on vibes and marimbas. Harris is a three-time Grammy nominee, six-time Best Mallet player by the Jazz Journalist Association, and recipient of Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award. He serves on the executive board of directors for Chamber Music America and was the first musician elected to the WBGO-FM board of directors. The virtuoso has been a member of the SFJAZZ Collective as well as led his own band Blackout. For his Miller Theatre show, Harris introduces his new band, Sonic Creed, an ensemble that swings, grooves and soothes. Included in the band are rising-star flutist Elena Ayodele Pinderhughes, guitarist Mike Moreno, pianist James Francies, bassist Joshua Crumbly and drummer Jonathan Pinson.
